As I wrap up my ninth Jim West mystery, I wonder how I should age my character. My first book came out in 2010, and here it is 2022. My character has aged only seven years. I know it's fiction, and I can do whatever I want, but I often wonder if the reader likes the characters to remain essentially the same throughout a series, or if they like seeing the character age along with them. I try to keep his personality the same and the stories similar length, but I do like to bring in different characters and settings. The age thing, though, has me wondering. Should I be aging Chubbs, his pet dog, too? I've looked at other series and some authors age their characters and some don't. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. - Bob
